The church was gathered by God to fix the world.
God is one, undivided, perfectly whole, filling the entire universe he created. The world, however, is broken, divided, and in need of repair. The Bible tells us that God's desire for the world is that it would be healed. The instrument that God chooses to heal the world? The church.
The church would seem to be an unlikely choice, for two reasons. First, the church often appears irrelevant in today's world. However, the Bible says that God chose what is weak in the world to shame the powerful. After all, God selected an obscure carpenter from an oppressed people to change the world. Second, it would seem that the church might be a poor choice to initiate reconciliation, given that the church is often fighting among itself. The Bible tells us that the church can rise above its divisions when it puts the mission first.
This Sunday in church we are going to look at the Biblical vision for the church, as recorded in the Letter to the Ephesians: "There is one body, one spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all." When a church believes that and lives it, God can use that church for the healing of the world.
