Give Your Life
We want to make our lives more than they are. We want to improve our lives by adding to them. We want to make our lives more happy, more satisfying, more meaningful. Sometimes the Bible encourages us in this direction. Sometimes the Bible pushes us in the opposite direction. Sometimes the Bible says that we should give our life away.
Jesus said, "Greater love has no one that this, to lay down one's life for one's friends." Jesus is clear that he is talking about giving your life, not about making your life more than it is. If we look closely, we notice two other things. The first is that Jesus is talking about giving our life for our friends, not for our enemies, not for all humanity. Most of the sacrifices we make are going to be for people we already known. The other thing we notice is that Jesus did not say "Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends, once and for all." Giving our life is usually not one grand, one time sacrifice. More likely it will be pouring our life at little at a time, day by day, for people we already know.
This Sunday we will continue our sermon series, "The Life That is Really Life" by talking about how Jesus calls us to give our life, loving one another as he has loved us.
