God Never Gives You More Than You Can Handle?
Maybe people have said it to you. Maybe you have heard it said to other people. "God never gives you more than you can handle." They are trying to give a word of encouragement in tough times. And they think it's true, because it's in the Bible. But the Bible doesn't actually say that.
This Sunday, we start a new sermon series, "Things Jesus Never Said." Jesus is one of the most quoted persons in history. He is also one of the most misquoted. To paraphrase Yogi Berra, another fountain of quotes, Jesus never said half the things he said. Over the next eight weeks, we will look at sayings like "God helps those who help themselves" and "You get what you deserve." And this Sunday, "God won't give you more than you can handle."
What the Bible actually does talk about is being put to the test. Everyone is put to the test sometime. Some are tempted to stray from God in their desire for pleasure, power, or possessions. Others go through suffering and are tempted to lose faith. Everyone one is put to the test sometime.
On Sunday, we will look at what the Bible has to teach us. We will see that when God brings us to the test, he also provides a way out. In the end, it's not about what we can handle. It's about what God can handle.
