Life in the Word
You know a lot of words. If you are a typical native English speaker, you probably know somewhere between 20,000 and 35,000 words. That is a lot of words.
Words are what make us human. Words help us to form the thoughts that make us human beings, distinct from the rest of creation. In all the universe, we are the creatures who are shaped by words, and who use words.
Words also connect us to God. We are made in God's image, and our God is a God who speaks. God created the universe with words. God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. We are the verbal creation of a verbal God.
We are surrounded by words all day long. We each hear 20,000 to 30,000 words every day. But which words do we listen to? We listen to the words of God as taught us by Jesus. And to Jesus, who is the Word of God made flesh. Jesus' words tell us, first and foremost, that God is. Jesus' words then tell us that God is who Jesus says he is, the God of the Bible, the God revealed in Jesus.
This Sunday in worship, May 3, we will look at Living in the Word. We will look at the words Jesus has for us, and the Word make flesh whom Jesus is for us. And we will see how life in the word gives us the life that is really life.
