Samuel was one of the most important people in the Bible. In addition to being crucial to the history of his people, Samuel has two important lessons for us. He teaches us the importance of being honest, and he teaches us the importance of speaking the work of God.
Samuel teaches us the importance of being honest. It says in the Bible that all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was a trustworthy prophet of the Lord. Society doesn't work if people are not trustworthy. God made one of the fundamental ten commandments the law that one should not bear false witness against another. When Samuel came to power, he followed people who cheated worshipers and exploited the women, and he was challenged to change the culture. Samuel showed us the importance of being honest.
Samuel also spoke the word of the Lord. When Samuel was a child, the word of the Lord was rare in the land, according to the Bible. By the time that Samuel had grown up, the Lord revealed himself to Samuel by his word, and the word of Samuel came to all Israel.
In our sermon our Sunday, we are going to look at the story of Samuel, and how the word of the Lord was important for Samuel's age, and for ours.
